Project introduction

This crochet Bee Gnome is an original design by GoldenLucyCrafts, pairing the designer’s heart gnome construction with a bee theme. It functions as a small ornament, an applique for embellishments, or one piece of a longer garland if you make several. The cap carries the bee idea: it is striped in yellow and brown rather than left in a single holiday color.
The design builds on the designer’s earlier Christmas gnome pattern, which also has a video tutorial. Like other gnomes in the series, the cap, beard, and body grow from heart shapes. Related heart gnome designs from this creator include Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Graduation, Patriotic, and Lilac versions. There are also bee-themed companions such as a heart bee applique and a lavender and bees wall art piece.
The free pattern is available online. A print-friendly, styled, advertisement-free PDF is also sold through the designer’s Etsy shop. For the full instructions, see the Original designer’s pattern and instructions.

Finished Size

The completed gnome measures roughly 5-3/4 inches from top to bottom when the hanging loop is not counted.
Yarn
Worked in Knit Picks Dishie, a medium weight #4 cotton. The color plan uses coffee as Color A, bumblebee as Color B, white as Color C, and cream brulee as Color D.
Hook and other materials
Crochet hook 7/4.5 mm, Yarn needle, Sewing needle, Matching sewing threads.
Note
Changing colors mid-stitch: work the stitch in the current color but stop before the final yarn over and pull through. At that point the hook holds either two loops (SC, DC, and TR) or three loops (HDC). Drop the first color, pick up the new color, pull it through those remaining loops, and the stitch is finished in the new shade.
Construction Overview

The Bee Gnome is made from separate pieces: a hat, a beard, a body, and a nose. Each is crocheted on its own and then sewn together, which keeps the shaping of the heart elements crisp and makes assembly straightforward. The two feet are worked directly onto the body rather than made as separate pieces. The pattern is an original design by GoldenLucyCrafts, so copying, rewriting, redistributing, reselling, or translating it is not permitted, and that restriction also covers video tutorials.
Cap
The cap is the most involved piece because two colors alternate throughout. Begin with Color A and leave a tail roughly 6 to 7 inches long, chain 14, then drop Color A, pick up Color B, and chain 1. Round 1 is worked under two loops along the starting chain, beginning with a treble crochet in the fifth chain from the hook, and then back along the opposite side after rotating the work.
Along the way the stitches move from taller to shorter and back again, using treble, double, half double, and single crochet with slip stitches, and the color changes between them. The round closes with a chain 4 and a slip stitch in the same stitch, and all ends are fastened off except the beginning tail.
Beard

The beard uses Color C and starts from a magic ring. Round 1 works a group of stitches into the ring: double crochet, half double crochet, chain spaces, and a double crochet heart point, then chains 3 and slip stitches into the ring. Round 2 builds single crochet stitches and increases around that shape, repeats the chain 1 and double crochet heart point, and finishes with a chain 3 and a slip stitch in the center before fastening off.
Body
The body uses Color B and also begins with a magic ring. Round 1 mirrors the beard structure, forming a heart shape with double crochet, half double crochet, chain spaces, and a central point. Round 2 expands the body mainly in half double crochet with increases, keeps the chain 1 and double crochet heart point in the middle, and ends with a chain 3 and slip stitch in the center before fastening off.
Right foot
Join Color A to the second stitch of Round 2 of the body. Chain 1, work two half double crochet into the same stitch, chain 1, and slip stitch into the same stitch, then fasten off.
Left Foot
Join Color A to the last stitch of Round 2 of the body. Repeat the same sequence used for the right foot: chain 1, two half double crochet in the same stitch, chain 1, slip stitch in the same stitch, then fasten off.
Nose
The nose uses Color D. Make a magic ring, chain 1, and work seven single crochet into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet and fasten off.
Finishing

Using a sewing needle and matching thread, sew the body, beard, cap, and nose together. Attach a 6 inch length of Color B yarn to the top of the cap, then use that attached yarn together with the saved beginning end to make a hanging loop. Block the finished piece as necessary.
