Granny Flower Pot au crochet: Pattern Overview

Project introduction

This is a pattern overview, not a full tutorial. Granny Flower Pot au crochet is a free French-language pattern from Croch Ta Maille, and the designer describes it as very easy and quick to make. It is presented as a beginner-friendly project for practicing how to assemble granny squares, and also as a decorative accessory that adds color to a home. The complete row-by-row instructions live on the designer’s site, so treat this page as a map of what to expect before you open the pattern.

If you want to follow along properly, read the Original designer’s pattern and instructions once before you pick up your hook. The pattern is written in French and uses diagrams alongside written explanations, so a little preparation goes a long way.

Matériel

Flat lay of four yarn balls in green, mauve, mustard and peach on a pale linen cloth, with a teal crochet hook, gold scissors, a yarn needle and a wooden blocking board.

The designer lists Scheepjes Stone Washed (130m per 50g) or an equivalent yarn in 4 different colors. The sample used specific colorways with approximate amounts: 806 Jade, less than 25g (C4); 832 Enstatite, less than 15g (C3); 810 Garnet, less than 5g (C1); and 834 Morganite, less than 5g (C2). These are sample-specific estimates, so your own yardage can differ.

  • Scheepjes Stone Washed (130m per 50g) or equivalent, 4 colors
  • Color 806 Jade: less than 25g (C4)
  • Color 832 Enstatite: less than 15g (C3)
  • Color 810 Garnet: less than 5g (C1)
  • Color 834 Morganite: less than 5g (C2)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook, adjusted to your tension if needed
  • Yarn needle and scissors for cutting and weaving in ends
  • 1 granny blocking board, or any other blocking surface

That is the full supply checklist as the source gives it. Nothing else is required, and the hook size is a starting point rather than a rule, since the designer notes it can be adapted to your own tension. The yarn amounts are the designer’s own sample figures, not a universal yardage chart.

Construction

Five crochet squares arranged in a cross shape on a light fabric background: three squares with orange flower motifs and green leaves, and two plain green squares.

The pot is built from 5 squares that are joined with the crochet hook rather than a sewing needle. Of those 5 squares, 3 follow diagram 1 (d1) and become 3 of the side faces, while 2 follow diagram 2 (d2) and become the fourth face plus the bottom of the pot. The construction diagram on the designer’s page shows how the pieces are positioned before joining.

Because the layout matters more than any single round, it helps to look at that construction image first and keep it nearby while you work. The pattern itself supplies the diagrams and written explanations for both square types, so this overview only describes how the parts fit together.

Points techniques

A crocheted granny square with a pink flower center, green petals and a dark red border, resting on a small pot over light fabric with loose yarn strands.

Several technical notes shape how the squares are worked. At the start of a row, 2 chain stitches count as 1 half double crochet and 3 chain stitches count as 1 double crochet, while 1 chain at the start of a row does not count as a stitch. Color changes happen on the last yarn over of the last stitch of the row, using the new color.

The work is done in the round without turning, and each round is closed with 1 slip stitch. Each square of the sample measures 9 x 9 cm, and because the yarn used is fairly elastic, the finished pot fits flower pots up to 13 cm in diameter. A diagram symbol list appears in the Croch’Projets notebook, and a complete symbol list is also available online.

Abréviations

The pattern uses French abbreviations, so here is the key as the source defines it. These are technical terms, kept exactly as listed so you can match them to the diagrams.

  • arc: arceau, an arch made of several chain stitches
  • b: bride (double crochet)
  • db: demi-bride (half double crochet)
  • m: maille (stitch)
  • mc: maille coulée (slip stitch)
  • ml: maille en l’air (chain stitch)

Square d1 is made three times, following diagram d1 with written explanations underneath. It begins with C1 in a magic ring and changes color each round, cutting the previous color as it goes: C1, then C2, C3 and C4. The early rounds build paired double crochets separated by chain arches, then petal-like groups of double crochets, then a round where the source specifies 17 m de chaque coté separated by 3ml forming the 4 corners.

The final round works single crochet with half double crochet corners, ending at a total specified by the source as 76m au total and 4 arc de 2ml. The source gives the full round-by-round text and the annotated diagram, so use the designer’s page for the actual stitch sequence rather than relying on this summary. Cut C4 and weave in the ends when the square is complete.

Carré d2 (x2)

Two green crochet squares side by side on a light wood surface, each with a small center opening and concentric rounds of stitches forming a square with corner spaces.

Square d2 is made twice, following diagram d2 with written explanations underneath. It is worked with C4, starting in a magic ring or in 4 chain joined by 1 slip stitch. Across five rounds it grows from 4 groups of 3 double crochet separated by 4 arches of 3 chain, through rounds with larger double crochet groups and corner arches, to a final round of single crochet with 2 single crochet, 2 chain, 2 single crochet in each arch.

That last round ends at 19 single crochets per side separated by 1 arch, four times. The yarn is then fastened off, cut and woven in. As with d1, the exact sequence belongs to the designer’s written explanations and diagrams, and this overview only sketches the shape of the square.

Le blocage

Four crocheted granny squares with pink, green, and yellow flower motifs pinned flat on a wooden blocking board.

Blocking evens out the size of the squares so they are easier to assemble. The designer suggests a granny square board made for this purpose, foam mats, old cardboard, or making your own board. The sample used the Milward granny square board, described as light, easy to store, and able to stack squares for blocking.

The method is simple: dampen the squares with a little water, place them on the blocking board, and wait until they are dry. Once dry, you can move on to assembly. If you already own a blocking surface, there is no need to buy anything special for this step.

With the 5 squares blocked, place them as shown in the construction image. Joining is done with slip stitches worked with the crochet hook, described as a kind of seam, first square to square and then around the top of the pot as a finish. Attach yarn C3 in one corner of a square, secure it with a chain, then work slip stitches with the squares wrong sides together, going through the back loop of the upper square and the front loop of the lower square.

Keep those slip stitches supple, or work them with a larger hook, so the seam does not pull tight. Once the 5 squares form the pot, one round of slip stitches around the top edge completes it. The designer’s page includes photos of the seam and the finished pot, which are worth checking before you join anything.
