Project introduction
Welcome to our pattern overview of the Crochet Clutch Bag Pattern from Blue Star Crochet, designed by Veronika Cromwell. This guide covers materials, sizing and construction, while the row-by-row steps live with the designer. The finished clutch is a handy day-or-night accessory for everyday essentials.
The design works up quickly in a deeply textured stitch and can be carried plain in the hand or dressed up with a long shoulder strap. For the complete free pattern, visit the Original designer’s pattern and instructions on Blue Star Crochet.
Crochet Clutch Bag Pattern Details

Everything about this bag is built around texture. Veronika chose the lotus stitch, a popular mix of puff stitches and open chain spaces that creates a plush, dimensional surface. It is described as beginner friendly, so newer crocheters can learn the combination while making something genuinely useful.
The sample was worked in a Royal Blue DK cotton that shows off the textured stitching beautifully. A thicker cotton can be substituted for a firmer, more structured bag. The clutch pairs easily with daytime outfits and still looks polished for dinner with friends. An optional leather shoulder strap turns it into a crossbody style. The pattern is free to read on the designer’s website, while an ad-free PDF is offered through her shops, and the row-by-row steps sit behind a free subscriber sign-up.
Materials
Gather these supplies before you begin:
- Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 (DK weight, 100% cotton, 75 m per 50 g ball, shown as 80 yds): 3 balls in Royal Blue
- 5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Magnetic buttons for the closure
- Leather handbag strap (optional)
- Tassel maker
Tension
Work to a tension of 3 pattern repeats by 9 rows for a 10 x 10 cm square. For a quick check, chain 26 and work a swatch following the stitch pattern, then measure before starting the bag so sizing stays true.
Finished Size

The finished clutch measures 22 cm wide by 15 cm high, a compact shape that holds a phone, cards and a few small essentials. It stays light enough for comfortable all-day carry and pairs well with both casual and evening outfits.
Stitches and Abbreviations (US terms)

The pattern uses US crochet terms. Quick reference:
- ch: chain stitch
- sc: single crochet
- puff st: puff stitch, made by drawing several loops through the same stitch and closing them together
- ch-sp: chain space
- lotus st: the featured stitch combination, explained in the designer’s video tutorial HERE
- picot: a tiny loop made with three chains joined back into the first chain with a slip stitch
Crochet Clutch Bag Pattern Notes

The clutch is worked in rows of lotus stitch, keeping the stitches aligned by working into both sides of the foundation chain. The shorter side becomes the front panel, completed and fastened off. Yarn is rejoined into the underside of the chain for the longer back panel and closing flap.
The flap is edged with single crochet and finished with picots. An optional tassel hangs at the side, while a magnetic clasp secures the closure. Attach a leather handle on either side for shoulder wear, or carry the bag plain as a clutch. To widen it, add repeats using the stitch multiple of 6 plus 2.
Crochet Clutch Bag Main Pattern Overview

The full row-by-row instructions sit behind the designer’s free subscriber sign-up. Once unlocked, you build the front panel first, working rows of the lotus stitch combination from the foundation chain. It is completed and fastened off before the yarn is rejoined for the back.
The back panel starts from the underside of the same chain and grows into the longer back and closing flap. The result is a flat rectangle, the clever starting point for the bag’s shape. For exact stitch placements, repeats and row counts, follow the designer’s unlocked instructions.
To finish off the crochet clutch bag edge

The top edge gets an edging row of single crochet with picots adding decorative points. Fasten off and weave in all ends, then fold the rectangle along the foundation chain and sew both sides closed with a yarn needle. Add a 10 cm tassel to the side, fix a magnetic clasp at the center of the closure, and attach leather handles on either side if you are using them.
Final thoughts…

This clutch earns its place in regular rotation, pretty enough for an evening out and practical enough for daily errands. If you enjoy it, share the pattern with your crafty friends. The textured stitch makes even a single-color version look special, so try it in your favorite shade.
