This is a pattern overview, not a full tutorial. The Baby Cozy Days Daisy Blanket is an original design by Stephanie Lau of All About Ami, and the complete row-by-row instructions live on her blog. What follows is a practical map of the project: what it is, what you need, how it goes together, and where to find the real pattern. If you want the actual rounds and stitch counts, head straight to the Original designer’s pattern and instructions.

The blanket is crocheted in soft, machine washable worsted weight yarn, which makes it a sensible choice for a baby gift. It is built from 56 daisy granny squares that are seamed together, then finished with a border. Finished size is Width: 31″/75 cm, Height: 35″/89 cm, and one square measures 4.25”/10.8 cm x 4.25”/10.8 cm at gauge.

Three shades of Color Theory yarn carry the design. Color A is the background frame, shown as Tourmaline. Color B forms the petals, shown as Ivory. Color C is the daisy center, shown as Bee Pollen. The designer also swatched the daisy against Caper, Himalayan Salt, Bone, Canyon and Amethyst, so there is plenty of room to swap the background shade for a different look.

Each square is five rounds. Rounds 1 and 2 build the center in single crochet. Round 3 creates the petals with clusters. Rounds 4 and 5 form the background frame in half double crochet and double crochet. The designer notes that compared with the chunky Cozy Days Daisy Blanket, the worsted weight version adds one more repeat to the beginning cluster and petal clusters, giving a fuller petal.

Helpful video support exists alongside the written pattern. The designer’s YouTube channel includes a walkthrough of the five daisy granny square rounds, plus a video covering seaming and the border. The Magic Ring technique is also demonstrated separately if that start is new to you.

Once the squares are joined, the border is worked in joined rounds with the right side facing you. Round 1 uses the 4.5 mm hook in back loops only, which frames the squares. The remaining slip stitch rounds use the 6 mm hook and should be worked very loosely, otherwise the stitches tighten and the squares bunch. If you would rather skip the slip stitch rounds, the designer says you can continue with single crochet rounds instead. Blocking the finished blanket is optional but possible.

Pattern format and preparation

The written pattern is available free on the designer’s blog, and there is also a paid printable PDF: the designer describes an ad-free PDF with step-by-step pictures, 8 pages including the cover page, available to purchase. The free web version and the paid PDF are separate options, so treat them as such.

Before you start, gather the full supply list from the source so nothing stalls you mid-square:

  • 4.5 mm crochet hook for the granny squares
  • 6 mm crochet hook for the slip stitch border
  • Color Theory Yarn, worsted weight level 4. Color A (Tourmaline) requires 4 skeins totaling 332 g or 817 yds. Color B (Ivory) requires 2 skeins totaling 112 g or 279 yds. Color C (Bee Pollen) requires 1 skein totaling 56 g or 138 yds.
  • Lock ring stitch markers
  • Bent tip tapestry needle
  • Steamer for blocking (optional)

Yarn estimates for a single square are useful if you plan to resize. Each square uses Color A 5 g/12.3 yds, Color B 2 g/4.9 yds, and Color C 1 g/2.5 yds. The designer used approximately 11 g/27 yds to seam the squares and 41 g/101 yds for the border. If you add squares, check those per-square figures against your remaining yarn.

Construction is straightforward in outline. You crochet 56 squares, arrange them in a rectangle of 7 squares by 8 squares, seam them, then work the border. Seaming is flexible: the designer lists three slip stitch approaches, including a flat slip stitch seam, and notes that she chose whip stitch to avoid visible edges. For whip stitch, she split each corner chain 2 so one chain belongs to each side, cut 60” (152 cm) strands, and joined vertically first, then horizontally, working front loops on the wrong side so the back loops stay visible as a frame.

Special stitches used in the pattern include the Magic Ring, beginning cluster, cluster, and extended single crochet. The extended single crochet appears between squares in border Round 1 to fill the dips and match the surrounding stitch height. Yarn tails can be crocheted over when you change colors, and the designer also weaves them in the opposite direction for extra security.
