Project introduction

This is a pattern overview, not a full tutorial. The Christmas Gnome C2C Pillow is a free crochet pattern from Nanas Crafty Home for a pillow meant to brighten holiday home decor. The designer says the gnome design had been in her head since the previous Christmas and that it suited a Christmas in July theme. If you want the actual row by row instructions and the color pixel graph, use the Original designer’s pattern and instructions.
The same blog also offers other free gnome projects, including the Gnome for Christmas C2C Blanket, Gnome Towel Topper, Gnome Christmas Ornament, Gnome Christmas Tree Towel Topper, Gnome Couch Pillow, Gnome Bottle Topper and Gnome Tissue Box Cover, plus a collection of year round gnome patterns. If you enjoy this style of project, our Crochet Gnome Towel Topper: Pattern Overview covers a smaller companion piece.
Christmas Gnome C2C Pillow Pattern Details

The pillow is worked in the mini half double crochet corner to corner (C2C) technique. The designer notes that if you have never worked a C2C project before, tutorials are available to help you learn the method. She also mentions that a standard double crochet C2C version would produce a larger pillow than the mini hdc sample shown.
The sample uses two yarns for contrasting textures. Bernat Pipsqueak was used for the white portions, and Red Heart With Love was used for the rest of the pillow. Bernat Pipsqueak is described as fuzzy and textured, making the pillow soft and snuggly, while Red Heart With Love is called a soft pairing with vibrant colors.
The designer notes that Red Heart With Love seems to be discontinued now, and suggests substituting a favorite medium worsted weight acrylic yarn. Examples given include Red Heart Super Saver, I Love This Yarn!, Vanna’s Choice, Big Twist Value and Bernat. The panels are joined without sewing: single crochet and chains were worked between the corner to corner blocks around the outside edge of the panels, and a photo tutorial for that join is referenced in the Harvest Pumpkin Red Trunk C2C Pillow pattern.
The pom pom is optional. It was made as a C2C square in Pipsqueak yarn, with a long tail left for creating the pom pom and sewing it to the top of the pillow. The designer says a complete video tutorial is available for making this easy pom pom. The pattern was also part of the Christmas in July Make Along with Underground Crafter, described as 31 bloggers sharing a month of free patterns.
The designer offers this Crochet Gnome Pillow as an ad-free, printable PDF for a small fee, while also providing a free version on the blog. The paid PDF format is distinct from the free web version; purchasing the PDF does not change the availability of the free online pattern, nor does the free version make the PDF cost-free.

Christmas Gnome C2C Pillow crochet Pattern Overview

The pattern is written in US crochet terminology and uses the mini hdc (half double crochet) corner to corner technique. The designer notes the pillow could easily be made larger by using the dc (double crochet) C2C technique instead. Row-by-row instructions are available on the original site.
Supplies listed in the source are:
- 8.1 oz (430 yds) of Red Heart With Love in Blue Hawaii, labeled b
- 4.5 oz (130 yds) of Bernat Pipsqueak in Whitey White, labeled w
- .20 oz (11 yds) of Red Heart With Love in Pewter, labeled g
- 2.9 oz (155 yds) of Red Heart With Love in Holly Berry, labeled r
- .15 oz (8 yds) of Red Heart With Love in Sweet Pink, labeled p
- Size J/10 (6.0 mm) crochet hook
- 1 standard pillow insert, 17″ x 28″
- A small amount of poly-fil for stuffing
- Pom pom, tapestry needle and scissors
The approximate finished size is 17″ x 28″, which the designer notes is the size of a standard pillow. Gauge is given as 7 blocks = 4″. The abbreviations list includes b for blue, w for white, r for red, g for grey, p for pink, WS for wrong side, RS for right side, ch for chain, sc for single crochet, sl st for slip stitch and sp for space.
Once the panels are complete, they are joined without sewing. Single crochet and chains are worked between the corner to corner blocks around the outside edge of the panels. A photo tutorial for this joining method is referenced in the Harvest Pumpkin Red Trunk C2C Pillow pattern.
With the final side still open, the fiber fill or pillow insert is added, then the join continues through the last side. Fasten off and weave in ends.
The pom pom is created as a single C2C square using color w, with a long tail left specifically for forming the pom pom and attaching it to the pillow. The designer provides a video tutorial for making this easy pom pom.
Finally, sew the pom pom to the top of the pillow using the leftover yarn and weave in any ends.
If you want to make this pillow, the full row by row instructions and the front panel and pom pom graphs are on the designer’s site. You can find them at the Original designer’s pattern and instructions.
