Shark Possum Crochet Pattern Addon by Nichet Crochet

This overview covers the Shark Possum crochet pattern addon from Nichet Crochet. The blog post was written by Theodore, while the pattern itself is credited to Nichet Crochet. The addon builds on the regular posm crochet pattern so you can turn that base design into a shark-themed plush. The source also notes that a finished plush of this item can be requested through a link on the designer’s page.

Shark Posm Crochet Pattern Addon

The addon is free to read, and the source describes it as a free crochet pattern that is an addition to the Posm Crochet Pattern. You must buy that base pattern from the designer’s shop before you can make this item, because the addon does not replace the body, feet, legs, or ear instructions. The base pattern is sold as a PDF here: Posm Crochet Pattern

Posm Pattern Changes

The addon keeps most of the original opossum build intact and changes only a few points. Plan your order of work around these adjustments:

  • Body: make the entire body as directed in the base pattern.
  • Feet: follow the base pattern as directed.
  • Legs: follow the base pattern as directed, but do not sew on the back legs until the shark tail is complete and sewn on.
  • Tail: do not make the opossum tail from the base pattern.
  • Ears: follow the base pattern as directed.

Tail

Crocheted gray shark tail with a large pointed dorsal fin, photographed from behind on a plain light surface, with a small part of the white face and black ear of the possum visible at the right edge.

The shark tail is worked in continuous rounds. It starts with 6 stitches and increases gradually to 30 stitches, with even rounds worked between the increase rounds. The piece is fastened off with a long tail for sewing, then stuffed thoroughly. Sew the tail onto Round 36 of the posm body, where the stitch count matches the final round of the tail, so it should sew on nearly perfectly. Add more stuffing as you sew if the shape needs it.

This fin starts the same way as the tail but finishes differently. Round 7 is worked as Sc 2, Inc 3, Sc 7 for 15 stitches. Round 8 begins with Sc 13, then the fin is folded and single crocheted shut like the ears; while closing it, work Inc 1, Sc 5, Inc 1, then fasten off and leave a tail for sewing, which gives 9 stitches. Sew the fin directly in the center of the posm’s back.

For a smoother finish, catch stitches from Rounds 7 and 8 of the fin with your needle and sew them into the body.

The smaller fin follows a shorter progression, reaching 12 stitches at Round 7. Round 8 starts with Sc 2, then the piece is folded and single crocheted shut like the ears; while closing it, work Inc 1, Sc 4, Inc 1, then fasten off and leave a tail for sewing, which gives 8 stitches. The sewing process matches the big fin, and this fin is sewn in at the base of the tail.

Tail Fins (make 2)

Make two identical fins, each increasing in pattern rounds up to 18 stitches at Round 8. Fold and single crochet shut like the ears; the closing round should have 9 single crochet stitches with no increases. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew the first 3 stitches of one fin to the last 3 stitches of the other, then sew one fin to the top of the tail and the other to the bottom.
