Crochet Coffee Sleeve: Pattern Overview

White takeout cup with a black lid held in two hands, wrapped in a gray-blue crochet sleeve decorated with three pink crocheted roses and green leaves, resting over a linen cloth.

Project introduction

A crochet coffee sleeve, also called a coffee cozy, makes a useful handmade gift for a friend, teacher, or mom. Coffee and tea lovers tend to appreciate a cozy that keeps their hands comfortable while they hold a warm cup. If you enjoy giving homemade presents, this is a small project that still feels personal.

The original designer’s pattern and instructions are available at Original designer’s pattern and instructions. This overview summarizes the key details so you can decide whether the project suits your skills.

Supplies

To complete this project, gather the following materials:

  • 1 to 2 colors of medium worsted weight yarn (the example uses cotton yarn)
  • H-8 hook for the sleeve and roses
  • E-4 hook for the tiny leaves
  • Yarn needle

Stitch abbreviations/terminology

Familiarize yourself with these US crochet terms used in the pattern:

  • Chain, ch
  • Slip stitch, sl st
  • Single crochet, sc
  • Half double crochet, hdc
  • Double crochet, dc
  • Increase (2 hdc in 1 st), inc

Important for this project

Work in rows to prevent the look or pattern from shifting. You can also work in rounds by following the same steps without joining them. To achieve the knit look, alternate the 3rd loop (right below the back loop) on even rows and the front loop on uneven rows for all half double crochets.

You can adjust the size by repeating row 7 until you reach your desired height. For a wider sleeve, add more chains before starting row 1. Consider changing colors every row or every second row for a striped effect. You can also personalize the sleeve by adding crochet hearts, flowers, characters, buttons, or beads.

Sleeve part

Flat blue crocheted coffee sleeve panel worked in rows, with a loose strand of matching yarn coiled in loops at the upper right, resting on a beige linen surface.

The sleeve begins with a chain of 30. Row 1 works a half double crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook, then half double crochets across, ending with a chain 2 and turn, which gives 28 stitches. Rows 2 through 5 repeat half double crochet in every stitch or 3rd loop, chain 2, and turn, keeping 28 stitches. Row 6 adds an increase at each end with 13 half double crochets between them, chain 2, and turn, bringing the count to 30 stitches.

Row 7 works half double crochets across, then chain 1 and turn, still 30 stitches. Round 8 works single crochet across the entire row, fastens off, and leaves a tail for sewing, with 30 stitches.

Crochet Flower Rose Patterns

The rose motifs are designed to lay flat against the coffee sleeve. Three sizes are provided to create visual interest.

Big Rose

Start with a chain of 16. In Row 1, begin in the second chain from the hook and work 2 single crochets in each stitch across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Mid-sized Rose

Begin with a chain of 12. In Row 1, begin in the second chain from the hook and work 2 single crochets in each stitch across. Fasten off with a long tail for attachment.

Small Rose

Use a chain of 8 to start. In Row 1, begin in the second chain from the hook and work 2 single crochets in each stitch across. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Tiny Leaf

Two small crocheted green leaves and three pink crocheted spiral rose shapes in progress, arranged on a light fabric background with loose yarn tails still attached.

Make two leaves. Start with a chain of 5. In Row 1, work 1 single crochet in the second chain from the hook, then a double crochet in the next stitch, a half double crochet in the next stitch, and a single crochet in the next stitch. Fasten off with a long tail.

Shape the rose

Three small crocheted spiral roses in pale pink, deep magenta and medium pink, each with a long yarn tail, resting on a weathered grey wood surface.
Small pink crochet rose spiral with a yarn needle threaded through a strand of pink yarn, resting on a weathered wooden table with a blurred thimble and scissors in the background.
Three crocheted roses in hot pink, light pink and medium pink with green crocheted leaves attached to a blue gray crocheted sleeve band, loose yarn tails hanging down, resting on a light linen surface

Wind up the rose pieces and shape them. Sew the rolled-up single crochets together on the back side by stitching the loops. Use the tails to attach the roses and leaves to the sleeve. Weave in ends when finished.

How to Assemble the Sleeve

Line up both ends of the sleeve so the pattern aligns correctly. Sew the sides together and weave in any remaining ends. The free web version of the pattern is accessible via the designer’s link, while a printable ad-free PDF is available for purchase separately.

Thanks a Latte Gift!

Once the project is finished, you can attach a free printable “Thanks a latte” gift tag to make the gift extra special. The tag is offered as a free printable, so it pairs neatly with a handmade gift. Adding the tag is a simple way to finish the present and give the recipient a small note along with the crochet work.

My Favorite Crochet Tools

For those who enjoy crafting on the go, a stylish tote keeps supplies handy. The designer names portable scissors as a most favorite tool because they make it through security and fit perfectly in a hook case. A yarn bowl helps manage yarn smoothly, while an 85-piece crochet hooks kit with a case aids organization and has over 2,500 five-star reviews. Additionally, a stitch dictionary with step-by-step photos serves as a valuable reference resource.
