Project introduction
This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the Halloween Wreath crochet pattern. It is designed to help you understand the project structure, required materials, and key techniques before diving into the full instructions available from the original designer.
Boo!

The designer explains that a busy work schedule meant autumn decorating was skipped this year, so the household went straight to Halloween. Without the usual fall pieces in place, the Halloween stash looked thin, which prompted making a few new decorations. This wreath is built by crocheting three long spirals, stitching them together, and wrapping the joined group around an 18-inch wire wreath frame. The stitches are described as fairly easy, and the finished wreath is festive. Other holiday wreath patterns from the same designer include the St. Patrick’s Day Wreath, Easter Wreath, Valentine’s Day Wreath, and American Flag Wreath.

Special Stitches

These are the special stitches called for in the pattern:
- Shell Stitch: 5 dc in the same space.
- V-Stitch: (Dc, ch 1, dc) in the same space.
- Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog): Put the hook into a stitch, yarn over, and pull back through; repeat this in the next indicated stitch; yarn over once more and pull through all 3 loops on the hook. This creates a decrease.
- Single Crochet 3 Together (sc3tog): Works like sc2tog, but across three indicated stitches, finishing by pulling through all 4 loops on the hook. This creates a decrease.
- Back Loop Only (BLO): With the chain facing upward as usual, the back loop sits furthest from you.
- Bottom Loop: Turn the chain over, and the bottom loop is the one underneath.
Abbreviations
The pattern relies on standard US crochet abbreviations. YO stands for yarn over, while FC refers to the foundation chain or beginning chain. The terms ch(s) and st(s) denote chains and stitches respectively. Basic stitches include sc (single crochet), hdc (half double crochet), dc (double crochet), and tc (triple crochet). Decreases are indicated by sc2tog (single crochet 2 together) and sc3tog (single crochet 3 together). V-st represents the V-stitch, sl st is the slip stitch, and BLO means back loops only.
Notes
The wreath body is made as three separate garlands that are stitched together, then wrapped as a group evenly around the form. American crochet terms are used throughout.
Construction Overview

The main body is made with an H hook as three garlands, one each in Black, Dark Orchid, and Pumpkin. Each begins with a foundation chain of 540. Row 1 works V-stitches across, and Row 2 alternates single crochet in chain-1 spaces with shell stitches. The three garlands are joined along their foundation chains with an F hook and scrap yarn using slip stitches; the designer notes this joining is optional but helped keep the wrap even and in line.
The joined foundation chains are the part that touches the wire form, with the shells facing out. The garland is wrapped around the form until the ends meet, then the ends are stitched together to secure.
Web

The web is worked in Soft White with an H hook. It starts with a chain loop and grows outward in rounds, with the chain spaces lengthening each round. The final round leaves 4 to 5 inch tails, and additional tails are added at each remaining double crochet of that round. The wreath body strands are gently separated to expose the wire frame, then each long web strand is tied loosely to the frame without knotting at first.
Once the placement looks right, the knots are completed and loose ends hidden, and the wreath body is fluffed to conceal the frame.
Witch Hat (6.75”H x 7.5”W)

The witch hat is crocheted in Black with an H hook, starting from a foundation chain of 25. The brim is worked in back loops only, then the top continues directly from it without fastening off. The top is shaped with turned rows of single crochet that step down from 18 stitches to 2. Once finished, the tip is folded at an angle between Rows 22 and 23 and stitched down.
Witch Hat Band

The band uses Dark Orchid yarn and an H hook, starting from a foundation chain of 19. Row 1 works into the bottom loop of the chain, combining single crochet and half double crochet. Row 2 is single crochet across, giving 18 sc. The band is flipped so the slight arch faces downward and sewn just above the brim with a tapestry needle and the leftover tail.
Buckle

The buckle is made with Daffodil yarn and an H hook. A foundation chain of 25 is worked into the bottom loops using single crochet and sc3tog stitches. The piece is arranged into a rectangle, and the ends are stitched together. It is placed horizontally in the center of the hat band and secured. The witch hat applique is then attached to the wreath body with a few quick stitches using the black tail, hiding loose ends behind it.
Pumpkin

The pumpkin is crafted with Pumpkin yarn and an H hook. It begins with a chain 4 loop and increases in rounds of single crochet up to 36 stitches. Round 8 works into the loops behind the circle, not the back loop, using slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet to shape the pumpkin. Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing to the wreath body later.
Pumpkin Stem

The stem uses Coffee yarn and an H hook. Still working in the loops behind the circle, the Coffee yarn is attached in the next stitch after the pumpkin is finished off, then a short sequence of single crochet, chain, double crochet, and slip stitch forms the stem. Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing to the wreath body later.
Vine

The vine is made with Medium Thyme yarn and an H hook. A foundation chain of 7 is worked into the bottom loops with single crochet. The curly vine is attached where the stem meets the pumpkin. Three small triangles and a half moon shape are cut from the black felt, with teeth shapes cut from the half moon, and glued into the center circle with hot glue or craft glue. The pumpkin is sewn to the wreath body with the Pumpkin tail, and the stem with the Coffee tail, hiding loose ends behind the applique.
Spider
The spider body is worked in Black with an H hook, starting with a chain loop and increasing to 12 stitches before decreasing. Pipe cleaners cut to 4 to 5 inch pieces are inserted through the sides to form legs, then bent to resemble spider legs. Stuffing with fiberfill is optional; the designer did not stuff it. The head is a small circle of single crochet, with eyes made from Burgundy yarn using partial knots. The head is attached to the body opening, and the spider is positioned on the web.
