Autumn Leaf C2C Crochet Chart: Harvest Blanket CAL Square Overview: Pattern Overview

Finished crochet square in cream with a corner-to-corner maple leaf in burgundy, orange and gold, laid on pale linen beside a wooden crochet hook with a folded light fabric over one corner

Project introduction

Crocheted corner-to-corner square with an orange maple leaf outlined in brown on a cream background, photographed at an angle on light fabric.

The Autumn Leaf Square is the fourth installment of the Harvest Blanket CAL, designed by Erin of Juniper & Oakes. Claire of E’Claire Makery hosts this crochet along, which uses corner to corner (C2C) techniques with a harvest theme. Participating designers share a new free blanket square chart on Claire’s blog in blog hop format, and the free chart for this square is also available on the designer’s own site. You can also buy the ebook and get all the designs with written instructions at once.

This overview describes what the square involves, the supplies used in the sample, and how to access the chart or the full ebook. It is a description, not a substitute for the pattern. The chart and any written instructions come from the designer, with links to the original source.

If you are not ready to start the square today, save this overview to revisit when your schedule allows. A glimpse of the other patterns in this blanket CAL is available to help plan how the finished squares will look together.

Once you have the chart, the E’Claire Makery Crochet Club Facebook group is a place to ask questions and post pictures of works in progress and finished squares. If you do not use Facebook, you can still take part by making your squares on your own and sharing photos on any social media you have. Tag @juniperandoakes and @eclairemakery, and use #juniperandoakes so the designers can see your progress.

C2C Colorwork Tips

This design includes color changes. The designer says you can either carry the colors or create yarn bobbins that you join to the square as you need a different yarn color. She links to a clip from her Nordic Star square video for anyone who does not know how to make color changes, and to a separate video with tips for changing color in C2C. She also links to her YouTube playlist on C2C basics.

Corner-to-Corner or C2C

The square is built with half double crochet C2C techniques. This stitch is made from half double crochets, chains, and slip stitches. The designer links to a blog post on this technique, which includes a video tutorial. For comparison, traditional C2C uses a chain 3 plus 3 double crochets to form one pixel, and each increase is a chain 6 plus 3 double crochets.

To keep the blanket a more manageable size, this design uses a chain 2 and 3 half double crochets for each pixel, with increases of a chain 5 plus 3 half double crochets.

The Harvest Blanket CAL is not the designer’s only blanket crochet along. Her other blanket CALs include the Sweet Treats Blanket CAL, the Nordic Winter C2C Afghan CAL, the Boquet of Flowers CAL, and the Monthly Mosaic Mystery CAL. Each one is a separate project with its own theme and release schedule.

Here is a selection of other blanket crochet alongs the designer has designed for.

Prefer to crochet just THIS design?

Crochet square worked in corner-to-corner stitch showing an autumn maple leaf in orange and brown on a cream background, laid flat on a plain light surface.

A pillow pattern featuring just the autumn leaf square has been released. It is written for a 16 inch pillow insert and offers a smaller project if you do not want to commit to the full blanket. The designer links to a blog post about this pattern and lists purchase options on Etsy and Ravelry.

Level: Intermediate

The designer lists this square as intermediate level. Gauge does not matter as long as you stay consistent, and the sample square measures approximately 17 inches by 17 inches. Final size depends on factors such as your yarn, hook, and tension.

To estimate the final blanket size, the designer recommends a C2C calculator by Tasha at Stardust Gold Crochet. The process involves crocheting a swatch of four rows of C2C stitches with your chosen materials, then filling out the calculator on the linked page. For reference, the design is 25 by 25 boxes, and the final blanket is planned as 75 by 100 boxes.

Notes

The free release is a graph only, not written instructions. The designer describes this format as industry standard, and the full ebook is available if you prefer written steps. The square is a C2C design worked from the bottom right corner to the top left corner. Because it is a square, you do not need to increase on one side while decreasing on the other.

Each C2C pixel consists of 3 half double crochets and a chain 2. Rows 1 through 25 are increasing rows, and rows 26 through 49 are decreasing rows. Odd numbered rows are worked up, and even numbered rows are worked down. Even numbered rows are the right side, and odd numbered rows are the wrong side. A tutorial is referenced for anyone unfamiliar with the technique, including color changes.

The Yarn: Worsted

Finished corner-to-corner crochet square in sage green with a rust-brown maple leaf motif at the centre, photographed on a pale wood surface next to three balls of yarn in rust, sage green and light grey.

The sample uses WeCrochet Brava Worsted, a 100 percent acrylic light worsted yarn, or another light worsted yarn in three colors. The square was designed in 3 colors, but you can choose whatever colors you want. The designer invites creative liberties on the color scheme and encourages sharing pictures in her Facebook group.

The Hook: 6mm

A J/6.00 mm hook was used to make the sample square. The designer also mentions the Cookie Streamline Swirl from Furls Crochet as a personal favorite, noting that it feels good in her hands and that the yarn slides easily across the hook.

    The eBook

  • Free charts are released slowly over a few weeks, but the complete blanket pattern can be purchased as an ebook right away.
  • The ebook includes charts and written instructions for each square, plus pictures and video tutorials on C2C crochet, instructions for joining the squares, and guidance on adding a border.
  • During the event, the ebook is priced at $10, which works out to less than $1 per pattern before counting the bonus tutorials.
  • After the CAL ends, the price rises to $15. Buying early is the cheaper option if you want the whole blanket at once.

The Chart

Finished corner-to-corner crochet square in cream, orange and dark brown forming a maple leaf design, photographed flat on a plain light background.

The designer finds written instructions easier and quicker to follow than the chart, with no need to count little boxes or cross out rows as you go. If you prefer working from written steps for this square, the full ebook includes all the charts and written instructions for each blanket square.

A second advantage of the ebook is receiving the pattern for the whole blanket at once without waiting for each new design to be released. This suits makers who like to plan the entire project before starting.

    Ready, Set… CROCHET!

With the chart in hand, the designer invites you to work up the Autumn Leaf square and share your progress with other makers in the crochet along.
