Blue crochet owl coaster with two white eyes outlined in black, an orange beak and orange feet, and a lavender textured center, resting on a plain beige fabric surface with a small site watermark near the bottom.

These crochet owl coasters are a cheerful, quick project that suits beginners and anyone who wants a fast finish. The pattern is simple, and the finished coasters make charming gifts for friends and family.

About This Owl Coaster Pattern Overview

The owl coaster is an easy pattern built from four simple rounds of basic stitches and stitch combinations. It uses very little yarn, so it is a good way to use up leftovers, and you can make it in any color combination to match your home decor. Different yarn types, weights and hook sizes can turn the design into crochet appliques, Christmas tree decorations, holiday garlands, key chains, bag charms and more. The coasters also make unique fun gifts for birthdays or the holidays.

Pattern Details

The skill level is rated intermediate beginner. The yarn weight is #2 fine (sport, baby, 5ply). Two hook sizes are used: 4.5mm and 3.5mm. The finished coaster measures about 4 inches (10cm) by 4.5 inches (11.5cm). An intermediate beginner can complete one in less than 45 minutes.

Stitches Used

You will need chain stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble stitch and slip stitch, plus the ability to make a magic ring. The pattern also introduces two cluster stitches: the 2 double crochet cluster (2dcCl) and the 3 double crochet cluster (3dcCl).

A double crochet cluster is made by working incomplete double crochets in the same space and then completing them as one stitch, so the extra stitches do not change the stitch count of the round. In short:

  • 2dcCl: Work two incomplete double crochets in the same stitch, then pull through all loops on the hook.
  • 3dcCl: Work three incomplete double crochets in the same stitch, then pull through all loops on the hook.

Yarn and Hook Information

The original sample uses #2 fine (sport, baby, 5-ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with 16-18 wraps per inch. To make the coaster thicker and sturdier, two strands are held together with a 4.5mm hook, which gives the desired finished size. You can use other yarn weights, such as #4 medium or #5 chunky, with an appropriate hook size. For lighter yarns like #1 or #2, working two, three or more strands helps you reach the size you want. Final dimensions vary with materials, hook size and tension.

How To Make An Owl Coaster

This overview describes the construction flow only. The pattern is worked mainly in double crochet. Most of the body uses two strands of #2 fine yarn, while the eyes use a single strand so the eye area stays flat and a cup sits steadily. The first round begins with a magic ring, or a chain 4 joined with a slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring, and is made of 12 double crochets.

The second round works cluster stitches into the spaces between the double crochets: 11 groups of 2dcCL in color A and one 3dcCl in color B for the beak. Color A is not cut when the beak color is introduced; it is dropped and picked up again after the beak cluster. The third round changes to color C and must start in the third chain 1 space to the right of the beak, otherwise the fourth round will be off; it works three double crochets into each chain 1 space.

The fourth round shapes the head and wings using single crochets, half double crochets, double crochets, treble stitches and chain stitches.

What You Will Need

Gather the following supplies to replicate the sample or start your own variation:

  • Yarn: #2 fine (sport, baby, 5ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend with 16 to 18 WPI.
    • Color A, pink (belly): 14.2 yards (13 meters), double-stranded.
    • Color B, orange (beak and feet): 8.75 yards (8 meters), double-stranded.
    • Color C, light green (body): 24 yards (22 meters), double-stranded.
    • Color D, white (eyes): 4.3 yards (4 meters), single-stranded.
    • Color E, black (eye detail): 1 yard (1 meter), single-stranded.
  • Hooks: 4.5mm (US 7) for the coaster body; 3.5mm (US E/4) for the eyes.
  • Notions: Scissors and a yarn needle.

Finished Size & Gauge

The completed coaster measures about 4 inches (10cm) wide, not including the wings, and about 4.5 inches (11.5cm) long. For gauge, the first two rounds should measure approximately 2.5 inches (6.35cm) in diameter when worked with two strands of yarn and a 4.5mm hook.

Pattern Notes

The pattern is worked with two strands of yarn, except for the eyes, which are worked in a single strand. This prevents a bulky patch under the eye area that could otherwise make a mug or glass wobble on the coaster surface.

Construction Overview

The body construction follows a logical progression. Round 1 establishes the base circle with double crochets in color A. Round 2 adds texture with clusters and forms the beak using a color change. Round 3 expands the shape in color C, starting in the third chain 1 space to the right of the beak. Round 4 defines the silhouette, creating the head curve and protruding wings through a mix of stitch heights and chains. Always refer to the Original designer’s pattern and instructions for exact row-by-row counts.

Foot (make 2)

Close-up of the lower edge of a pink crochet owl coaster with a green center, showing two small yellow crocheted feet attached at the bottom.

Feet are crocheted directly onto the body rather than sewn on separately. Using Color B, work into the sixth stitch counted from under each wing. Slip stitch the yarn into that stitch, chain 3, make 2 double crochets in the same space, chain 3, and slip stitch into the same space. Then chain 1, cut the yarn, fasten off and weave in the ends. Repeat for the other foot to create symmetrical perches for the owl.

Eyes (make 2)

Two small white crocheted circles with black curved eye details, each with a long white yarn tail, resting on a plain beige fabric surface.

Eyes require precision to remain flat. Using Color D and a single strand with a 3.5mm hook, work a small circle: into a magic ring, chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), make 11 double crochets into the ring, and slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 to join. Pull the yarn tail tight to close the ring, cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing, fasten off and weave in the starting yarn tail.

For the eye detail, use Color E. Insert the hook between any stitch along the inside edge and make 6 slip stitches around the circle to create the eyelids. Then cut the yarn, fasten off, knot the two yarn tails at the back of the eye and trim the excess yarn.

Finish

To assemble, sew the eyes to the head using the long yarn tail. Position them on either side of the beak and in round three of the body for correct proportions. Once secured, block lightly if necessary to flatten any curling edges, though the double-strand technique usually keeps the fabric stable.
