Feather and Fan Shawl | crochet pattern | Haak Maar Raak: Pattern Overview

A folded lace shawl draped on a pale background, showing overlapping bands of plum, yellow and pink worked in an open fan stitch pattern.

Feather and Fan Shawl

The Feather and Fan Shawl is a modern take on a traditional design by Kirsten at Haak Maar Raak. Bright, bold colours meet a lace stitch repeat that the designer describes as creating a beautiful drape, and the project is written in US terms. It suits anyone who enjoys the challenge of working with laceweight yarn, and the skill level is listed as beginner. The pattern is free to read on the Haak Maar Raak website.

Materials and preparation

Yarn

The recommended yarn is Scheepjes Alpaca Rhythm, an 80% alpaca and 20% fine wool blend sold in 25g balls of 200m. Four colours are used, two balls of each:

  • Colour A: Merengue (code 666), 2 balls
  • Colour B: Disco (code 668), 2 balls
  • Colour C: Paso (code 662), 2 balls
  • Colour D: Quickstep (code 651), 2 balls

Shop the yarn

Alpaca Rhythm can be bought through Scheepjes retailers, such as Wool Warehouse (UK).

Crochet hook

The pattern specifies a 3.5mm hook, which corresponds to US Size E/4.

Measurements

After blocking, the finished shawl measures 160 cm (63 in) in length and 68 cm (27 in) in width.

Gauge/tension

Gauge is given for one finished and blocked stitch repeat, which should measure 7 cm (2 and three quarter in) in width and 2 cm (0.8 in) in height. Checking it before starting helps the finished size match the intended proportions.

Repeat formats

The notation is straightforward once you know the conventions:

  • An asterisk means working the instructions after it, then repeating that section the stated number of further times.
  • Parentheses mean working the enclosed stitches the total number of times indicated.
  • Square brackets show the stitch count at the end of a row or round.

Notes

The 18 rows per colour used in the pattern make the most of the yardage on a skein, leaving the designer about 5m of each colour. If your gauge differs and you use more yarn, reducing to 17 rows per colour is suggested so that every colour keeps the same number of row repeats. Stitch markers were used to keep track of the centre of each fan repeat.

Crochet Pattern Overview

Shawl

The shawl begins with 152 chains in Colour A. Row 1 is a right side row of half double crochets. Row 2 is a wrong side row of treble crochets with skipped stitches that form the fan motif. Row 3 returns to half double crochets. Rows 2 and 3 are repeated another 17 times for Colour A, then the yarn is cut.

Colours B, C and D are each joined with a slip stitch and worked for 18 repeats of rows 2 and 3. Ends are woven in and the piece is blocked to set the shape.

Adjusting the size

The stitch multiple is 15 + 2 chains. To alter the length, add or omit repeats of rows 2 and 3, noting that each repeat adds approximately 2.2cm (0.85in). To increase width, add multiples of 15 to the starting chain, for example 152 + 15 chains or 152 + 45 chains. Each added multiple of 15 adds about 6.8cm (2.6in) to the final width. Adjust the number of pattern repeats in the instructions to match.
