Project introduction

This is a pattern overview, not a full tutorial. The Monday Project crocheted fall leaves come from Deborah at Art Threads, and the design grows out of a common Irish crochet approach to making leaves. The designer originally tried to shape them into a maple leaf, and notes that attempt did not quite work out, though she is still working on it. The finished leaves, as she describes them, are quick, easy and, in her words, addictive.
Because the row-by-row directions live on the original blog, this page explains what the project involves, what you need, and how the construction works in general terms. For the actual steps, work from the Original designer’s pattern and instructions, which includes the numbered directions and step photos.
Pattern format and preparation
The supply list is short and specific. One skein of embroidery floss makes one leaf with a little left over, and the pattern calls for a size 4 crochet hook. That is the complete materials list as published, so there is nothing else to gather before you begin. If you like working small motifs, this fits neatly into an evening.
Construction starts with a chain 16 foundation. Single crochet runs down one side of that chain, then up the opposite side without turning, leaving the top chains free to become the leaf’s point. From there, chain 2 turns and single crochet runs back down create additional points, repeating until four lower leaf points sit on each side. A chain 6 stem is worked and joined to the leaf body, then a slip stitch and fastening off finish the motif.
Two finishing notes matter. The leaves roll up a bit as made, and the designer says you can steam iron or block them if you would rather have them flat. A running stitch sewn up the center with leftover thread from another leaf adds the vein detail. Both are optional choices rather than required steps.
If you want to build a fall set, these pair well with the Fall Pumpkin Coaster Crochet Pattern - Get Festive: Pattern Overview and the Fall Table Runner: Pattern Overview.
