This is a pattern overview, not a full tutorial. The Apple Mason Jar Cover with Worm comes from Kitty’s Kreations Boutique, and it turns an ordinary jar into a small apple with a cheeky worm peeking out. The designer made hers for an Atlas Mason jar that she upcycled from a pasta sauce jar. For the complete row by row instructions, follow the Original designer’s pattern and instructions.
Apple Mason Jar Cover with Worm

The cover begins from a linked mason jar cover pattern that the designer credits as her base, then she adds her own changes and additions on top of it. She notes that the base pattern is free to view at yarnandchai.com, so the linked foundation is a free web pattern. Her own page hosts the project with its modifications, the leaf, and the two worm ends.
Construction moves in clear stages. The cover is worked with the larger hook, with a modified round early on, then a set of single crochet rows, then 17 rows of a cluster stitch that combines a single crochet and a double crochet while skipping the next stitch. Brown yarn follows for 4 rows of single crochet. Two leaves are made on the H hook, and a green chain long enough to circle the jar top is threaded through the brown single crochets, with the leaves attached and tied.
The worm has a front end and a back end, both on the D hook. The front starts with 6 single crochet in a magic circle, grows through increases, holds steady, then decreases, with black yarn used to stitch the eyes and a final back loop round. The back end starts in black, then peach is attached to the inner stitches of that black circle, with single crochet rounds and decreases, and a long tail left to close the center. Stuffing is optional, and the ends attach to the cover.
Pattern format and preparation
Gather everything before starting so the color changes and small pieces flow smoothly. Here is the full supply list as the designer lists it:
- Size H 5.0 mm hook
- Size D 3.25 mm hook
- Tapestry needle
- DK fine yarn, #3 weight
- Cascade Yarns Cherub DK Color 25 for the red part of the cover
- Mary Maxim Baby’s Best Color Cocoa for the stem and top part of the cover
- Red Heart Super Saver Black
- A peach color, which had no tag; the designer suggests Red Heart Super Saver, which comes in many shades
- Big Twist Yarn in green
- A small amount of stuffing
- One pipe cleaner, which the designer says is not needed if the worm is stuffed well
Useful abbreviations for this project: magic circle, ST for stitch, SC for single crochet, Sc2tog for single crochet 2 together, HDC for half double crochet, and DC for double crochet. The designer also mentions a video tutorial on her YouTube channel, and she invites questions by email at KittysKreationsBoutique@Gmail.com.
